First step of deck construction
Every great project needs a great idea. I have toyed with creating a tarot deck, but found it to be overwhelming. The lenormand is much easier to come up with then a tarot deck since in lenormand there are only 36 cards instead of 78. It all starts with a kernel of an idea. For me I was certain that the Tudor England theme was were I wanted to go.I have loved the history there since I was very young. I then sat down and made a list of every card in the deck. From there it is a matter of meditating and brainstorming for what in general might fit that card.
Finding the perfect images
Why you can't just slap any old image up there. Once you have the general idea of the cards in your mind it is time to start thinking about the actual image. First you have to decide if you want photos, drawings, etc... I decided that I wanted to stick with photographs as much as possible because of the detail level I could get into the card. But that also means that you have to find the PERFECT image because you won't really be able to change it. And the perfect image has to convey the meaning of the card. Here is an example - when I was looking for Tudor era riders these are some of the images that I came across.
Naturally my favorite image was the one of King Henry on horseback. Only problem is that because it is from a movie the amount I would have to pay to use commercially far outweighed the potential money to be made off the deck. The picture of Elizabeth seems the next likely choice, right? Nope. The rider card is traditionally male and she is moving at a slower pace, where the rider needs to be quick. Ultimately it was the knight we chose - English, male, in a hurry... delivering the message of Christianity... and free to use. It took a week and countless images before locating one that we liked that could be used free or inexpensively. Now multiply this process over 36 cards and you can see why this is not as easy as it seems!
WE worked long and hard to find a printer for these cards, and had it narrowed down to two of them. One was a US based company that prints board games, tokens and cards. They were a little higher priced and had difficult templates to work with. The other is a company based out of Hong Kong. They do awesome work for decent pricing, offered easy to work with templates and packaging. Only problem is that they are in Hong Kong. That is part of the reason why we are raising funds - to allow us to place a large order all at once and have really nice custom packaging designed. The stretch goal for this campaign would allow us to publish an ACTUAL companion book in paperback.
So please, if you are able to contribute we would really appreciate it. If you can't contribute that's OK too, we just ask that you share our campaign with your friends and groups that may be interested.
